Latest newsletter from the Welsh Political Archive
3.02 MiB drawing or desktop publishing documentThe Welsh Political Archive at the National Library of Wales has made some interesting new acquisitions recently across the range of Welsh political history but there are some especially fascinating new papers in the collection concerning both Liberal politics and Lloyd George.
The Library was kindly donated 9 boxes of papers relating to the life and career of Sir Guildhaume Myrddin-Evans by his family. Myrddin-Evans was a senior civil servant who served in Lloyd George's personal secretariat during the Great War, the Treasury between the wars and at the Ministry of Labour and advising the US Government during the Second World War before becoming UK Representative to the International Labour Organisation.
In addition the Library was able to purchase a collection of papers related to David Lloyd George created by a private collector. The bulk of the collection is the archive of George Scovell, who served as General Secretary of the Coalition Liberal Organisation, which later became the National Liberal Party. The archive mostly relates to the period when Lloyd George was Prime Minister and contains correspondence on party issues, reports on campaigns and the state of party organisation in various parts of the UK as well as a number of daily briefings prepared for Lloyd George on the day's press. This is an important addition to the Lloyd George collections at NLW as it relates to a period and topic in Lloyd George's career which is not so well covered in other collections and has interesting references to other recently acquired papers including the Rev J T Rhys (Margaret Lloyd George) Papers.
The Library recently purchased a hand written letter from William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) to Clarence Paget dated 24 December 1868, on 10 Downing Street headed notepaper, noting that 'The Welsh have made a notable demonstration in many of their elections and one which ought to warn the clergy of what they are about'.
There is much more of interest in the newsletter which is now uploaded to this website. It includes an article, written by the Secretary of the Lloyd George Society, about Lloyd George's early political career as he was ambitiously campaigning to become a Liberal parliamentary candidate and the the background to his election in 1890 as the MP for Caernarfon Boroughs.
