Clement Davies; Triumph and Tragedy. A personal Portrait of the former Liberal Leader

379.58 KiB drawing or desktop publishing document in "Documents".

At last February's weekend school, Christopher Clement-Davies, the grandson of former Liberal Party leader Clement Davies, gave us a wonderful presentation about his grandfather. The talk was an in-depth evaluation of Davies' family life and of his career in the law, business and politics. It was also for Christopher a public opportunity to honour his grandfather's memory.

Christopher has now kindly shared the text and slides of his presentation. Members and supporters of the Society can now revisit or enjoy for the first time Christopher's appreciation of this important figure in Welsh and British politics, someone who played a pivotal role in the downfall of Neville Chamberlain in 1940 and his replacement by Winston Churchill. Davies also put the survival of the Liberal Party before personal ambition by turning down Churchill's offer to him in 1951 of a seat in the Cabinet as Minister of Education as part of a coalition arrangement.

We thank Christopher Clement-Davies for coming to the school and for the chance to share more widely his talk on his grandfather.
