Do you want to buy a rare Lloyd George somersaulting toy?

February 2, 2008 6:28 PM

According to a story in today's Western Mail, a rare wooden and papier mache toy, made to look like David Lloyd George, is to go on sale. The toy is designed to turn somersaults - just like the real Lloyd George is criticised for.

The Western Mail reports that British toy-makers were resentful towards Lloyd George's wartime administration, as it had given the manufacturers to understand that if they re-tooled and went into serious production of toys during the 1914-18 war, they would be given protection from German imports afterwards. But in the years before 1920, many went into receivership, as the promised import duties were removed and again Britain became dependent on imports. It was particularly galling that many post-war imported toys were German.

The attached picture has been chosen to illustrate this story because it shows former Lib Dem MEP, Saj Karim, who has recently somersaulted to another political party holding a toy.
