The Wizard, the Goat and the Man Who Won the War – Lloyd George’s life on stage

Playwright D J Britton, who lectures in Creative Writing at Swansea University has written a one-man play about the life of David Lloyd George. It will star actor Richard Elfyn and will tour venues across Wales this coming November. An early version of the drama was given a reading in Lloyd George’s home village of Llanystumdwy and last year the play had its first production at the Dylan Thomas Festival in Swansea.

The title of the play is of course taken from fom the three nicknames given to LG, a political wizard with a chequered private life who was feted as the hero of the First World War. The play explores how a lowly Welsh-speaking chapel boy rose to become Prime Minister, how a man who would champion non-conformist Christianity could become a well-known womaniser and how the politician who introduced old age pensions and national insurance for the poor became wealthy by, amongst other means, the sale of honours.

The theatre tour has been part-funded by the Arts Council of Wales with production help from Swansea’s Taliesin Arts Centre, where the play has its premiere on November 10.
will also be staged at Borough Theatre, Abergavenny (November 11); Galeri Caernarfon (November 12); Theatr Harlech, (November 13), Torch Theatre, Milford Haven (November 15); Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan (November 16); Aberystwyth Arts Centre (November 17); Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold (November 21 & 22); Neuadd Dwyfor, Pwllheli (November 23); Theatr Soar, Merthyr (November 25); and The Riverfront, Newport (November 26)
