Threat to Lloyd George school increases
The Society understands that Councillors in Gwynedd have now voted in favour of plans to reorganise primary education in the county. This means they are one step closer to closing 29 rural schools in Gwynedd, including Lloyd George’s old school in Llanystumdwy. This was in the face of a noisy protest by around 600 campaigners in Caernarfon before councillors met to discuss the plans.
Gwynedd Council says reorganisation is needed because of a dramatic fall in pupil numbers over the last 20 years but the Society has learned that the issue of surplus places in schools is more complex. Individual schools such as Llanystumdwy are reported to be performing brilliantly not only in terms of quality of education but also in respect of pupil numbers. In fact, the capacity at the school is at 135%!
The need for support to help Save Llanystumdwy remains high.
