Lloyd George, Liberals and Blue Plaques
Recently, our Chair was walking around Cowbridge in South Wales, a place he’s been to many times, and noticed something new – a Lloyd George Blue Plaque.
This got us thinking: have you, dear reader, noticed any blue plaques to Lloyd George or to historical Liberals?
I’ll be looking into this and I plan to make a list from the available databases. You can then follow the list and inundate me with your photos.

I would love to see a Blue Plaque here in Brighton for the house where Lloyd George stayed during the drafting and some of the struggles over the People’s Budget. Lady Olwen mentions it in her memoir “Lloyd George was my Father” I believe he was lent the house by Lord Rendel, the former Montgomeryshire MP, and that is was in either Clarendon Terrace or Chichester Terrace (they run into each other). But without an identification of the house, there can be no plaque. If any readers can identify the address, I would be very grateful to hear from them.
In the meantime I shall keep an eye out and report any Liberal Blue Plaques I do see.
I think this was also put up by.a Labour council! I wonder if any Liberal Democrat ones have done the same?

There’s a plaque in Leith commemorating the birthplace of Sir John Gladstone (father of the Prime Minister, W.E.G.).
The extent of Sir John’s ownership of slaves was such that after slavery was abolished, through the passage of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, he received the largest of all compensated emancipation payments made via the Slave Compensation Act 1837 for the loss of his slaves. Gladstone proceeded to expel the majority of the newly emancipated African freedmen from his plantations and imported large numbers of indentured servants from British India as part of the Indian indenture system. This was done by false promises, relayed through his agents, of providing them jobs, schools and medical attention. However, upon arrival they were paid no wages, the repayment of their debts being deemed sufficient, and worked under conditions that continued to resemble slavery in everything except name.
