Rare Photo of Welsh Liberal Party Leadership – Colourised

Back-row (L to R): Lord (Geraint) Howells; unknown; Ken Rees; and Emlyn Thomas, former General Secretary of the Welsh Liberal Party. Front row: Lord (Martin) Thomas; Lord Ogmore; Lord (Emlyn) Hooson; and Lord Lloyd of Cilgerran.

Don’t worry, this is not ‘It’s a Wonderful Life‘ colourised. It’s a lot classier than that!

Professor Russell Deacon, the Chair of Cymdeithas Lloyd George/The Lloyd George Society, has put his editing skills to good use and colourised a photo that will mean a lot to our members.

The photo was taken at the Liberal Assembly in Eastbourne in 1970 and is a rare snapshot showing the Welsh leadership, (including the President of the Society, Martin Thomas), in a year that saw the new party fight its first General Election.

We’re sure that our members will enjoy seeing this photo of old friends and hope the memories come flooding back.

For the rest of us, it is great to see the architects of the Welsh Liberal Party in their youthful glory.

It is not an exaggeration to say that this team saved Liberalism in Wales.

Diolch yn fawr!
