What happened to the voices arguing for a strong Welsh and British identity in the union? by Professor Russell Deacon

Alistair Cooke, Baron Lexden, the historian of the Conservative party, has kindly agreed to address the Society on the subject of the Lloyd George peacetime coalition. The first post 1918 government contained leading Liberals including Winston Churchill, HAL Fisher and Christopher Addison. But how Liberal was the government going to be faced with a Coalition partner which had won 379 seats as opposed to Lloyd George’s 127 and a Cabinet where most top jobs were held by Tories?

The meeting will be held in the Lady Violet Room of the National Liberal Club on the evening of Monday 15 November 2021, starting at 7:00pm. Members will recall Lord Lexden’s previous talks to the Society in London and Wales and the high standard of his scholarship. This promises to be an illuminating and entertaining evening.

The meeting is free of charge and open to all. You don’t have to be a member of the Lloyd George Society.
