Lady Megan Lloyd George honoured with commemorative plaque
Lady Megan Lloyd George, the charismatic daughter of a charismatic father; Liberal MP for Anglesey from 1929-1951, and the first ever female MP in Wales, has been commemorated as part of a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of the role of women in Welsh life.Lady Megan is one of a number of remarkable Welsh women who are to be celebrated with the unveling of a purple plaque. Lady Megan’s will be placed in her home town of Cricieth.
Lady Megan was a campaigner for women’s rights and for Wales all her life. After losing her seat in 1951, Megan Lloyd George found it hard to accept what she and other Radical Liberals believed was a right-wing move in the party under post-war leader Clement Davies. She wanted to continue in front- line political life and thought that Labour had by then inherited the best of the radical tradition in Welsh politics. She defected to Labour and returned to the House of Commons in 1957 as MP for Carmarthen until her death in 1966.
