Exhibition at the South Wales Miners Museum – Opens 25 March
The South Wales Miners’ Museum officially opened in 1976 and was the first mining Museum in Wales. The Museum is located within the beautiful Afan Valley six miles from the town of Port Talbot and is one of the many attractions to be found within the Afan Forest Park.
The Museum is a registered charity run and managed by volunteers dedicated to promoting Industrial Heritage in the Afan Valley. All admission charges and donations go towards the running and maintenance of the Museum.
The Museum portrays the working life of a miner and the hardship that both adults and children had to endure. The Museum is made up of both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Outdoor exhibits include a Blacksmith Shop, Lamp Room and an Engine House.
The museum has an upcoming exhibition on the late Vernon Hartshorn OBE. He was Member of Parliament for Ogmore during the early 20th c. He was also the fourth president of the South Wales Miners’ Federation and was a tireless mining leader. He was also a close friend of Clement Attlee, with Attlee being one of the pallbearers at his funeral; as well as working together in government. The exhibition is launching on the 25th of March 2019,
The Lloyd George Society is pleased to help publicise the exhibition and the Museum as an example of Welsh heritage contemporary with the life and career of David Lloyd George and of Welsh social, political and industrial history.
