David Lloyd George recognised as a ‘Great Briton’ by the Royal Mail

In the year of the 150th anniversary of the birth of David Lloyd George, the Welsh Wizard is included in a new set of postage stamps recognising a number of ‘Great Britons’.

Royal Mail say they hope the stamp will be a lasting tribute to the memory of the man who was Member of Parliament for Caernarfon Boroughs from 1890-1945 and was Britain’s great war leader during the First World War after becoming Prime Minister in December 1916.
Lloyd George was also an outstanding, reforming Chancellor of the Exchequer who laid the foundations of the welfare state in his ‘People’s Budget’ of 1909. It introduced old age pensions for the first time, paid for by death duties on the wealthy and paved the way for other social reforms such as health and umemployment insurance .
The new stamp has been welcomed by William Powell, Liberal Democrat AM (Mid and West Wales region ) and Powys County Councillor, who is a member of the committee of the Lloyd George Society. Cllr Powell said that the man who was Britain’s last Liberal premier was ‘without doubt one of our nation’s greatest Prime Ministers’.
