Remembering John Campbell – a celebratory lecture

Society members were shocked and saddened to learn at this year’s weekend school that one of our stalwart members and former speaker at the school, John Campbell, had died last year after being diagnosed with cancer. John, together with his wife Suzanne, were frequent visitors to the schools and regularly enlivened sessions with their trenchant and informed questions.
The Society is delighted to hear that one of the organisations which John strongly supported, Republic, the group which campaigns on what they regard as the key flaw in the democratic constitution of the UK, the role of the monarchy, is honouring his memory. John was Executive Chair of Republic for six years and as a tribute to John’s contribution to their cause Republic’s board has decided to launch the Annual John Campbell Lecture, featuring a keynote speaker who will speak on a topic of their choosing relevant to the aims of the organisation. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Michael Mansfield QC, one of the country’s leading campaining barristers.
The lecture will take place on 4 October 2011 at a venue yet to be confirmed. Tickets will cost £10. You can read more about the lecture and find out about what Republic’s do at: http://www.republic.org.uk/What%20we%20do/What%27s%20On/John%20Campbell%20Lecture/index.php
The Society hopes the John Campbell memorial lectures are a great success and a fitting testament to John’s memory.
