David Lloyd George – always in the news!
Members are mourning the death aged 75 of Lord Livsey of Talgarth who was a Vice-President of the Lloyd George Society and a frequent attender and speaker at Society weekend schools. We pay tribute to Richard’s work for the Lloyd George Society and for the cause of Welsh Liberalism. He was one of those rare politicians who are able to give their trade a good name.
Richard Livsey came to national prominence by winning the Brecon and Radnor by-election in 1985. He held the seat in 1987 and became leader of the Welsh Liberal Party in 1988. He lost Brecon and Radnor in 1992 but regained it in 1997 and in 2001 he stood down from the House of Commons and became a peer. His seat was held for the Liberal Democrats by Roger Williams who retains it to this day. He has remembered fondly by many who knew him and was held in respect across the political spectrum.
