Tom McNally, leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, was our after-dinner speaker at the 2010 weekend school
This year's weekend school, again held at the Hotel Commodore in Llandrindod Wells, was much enjoyed by another healthy attendance with fascinating insights into economics, history, Lloyd George and current political affairs given by guest speakers.
Our after dinner guest this year was the leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords and Spokesperson on Constitutional Affairs, Tom McNally. He entertained us with a stirring and amusing speech and we much appreciated having Tom and his family with us for the weekend. If you are regular reader of Liberal Democrat News, you will be aware that Tom's back-page article in this week's edition has some nice words to say about the school and the speakers and we certainly hope Tom will come back and stay with us again at future Lloyd George Society schools.
One disappointment however was our inability to host the usual Saturday night sing along of Welsh, traditional and Liberal songs because Martin Thomas (Lord Thomas of Gresford, one of our distinguished Vice-Presidents) was this year unable come to the school because of a prior personal engagement. Martin always leads these festivities from his travelling piano, ably supported by many fine Welsh voices from the audience, and the school certainly was not the same without this entertainment. Hopefully next year.
Our programme this year was varied and we hope to be able to put the text of some of the presentations on the website this year, as we were unable to do for technical reasons in 2009. Many thanks to all our speakers.
