More about the new LG book

Ffion Hague - author of The Pain and the Privilege

There is a review of Ffion Hague's new book about the women in the life of David Lloyd George, The Pain and The Privilege - entitled "the women behind the wizard" - in last Friday's (6 June) Independent newspaper. The review is the work of biographer John Campbell, himself the author of books about Lloyd George including If Love Were All... which tells the story of LG and Frances Stevenson.

Campbell writes that Mrs Hague is very good on Margaret Owen and that her book does contain new material about her, which together with Mrs Hague's own insights as a political wife, enables her to bring a new perspective to Margaret's role - hitherto seen either through the eyes of LG himself or of Frances Stevenson, which certainly was a partisan perspective.

Mrs Hague also draws the conclusion that Frances Stevenson's daughter, Jennifer Longford, born in 1929 was not actually the daughter of Lloyd George but of Thomas Tweed - who definitely seems to have been her lover at times in the 1920s. It is not likely we will ever know for certain.
